Carpenter Tells Las Vegas Meeting How to Avoid Cloud Computing Traps

Bob Carpenter recently presented the American Bar Association’s Cloud Computing and IT Services Subcommittee with his observations and analysis of how some cloud computing contracting practices create data portability traps for the unwary and how end users can avoid them. Bob described the vendor “lock-in” phenomenon and suggested avenues to avoid being trapped by contract provisions that erect substantial barriers to changing your vendor.

This presentation was an extension of Bob’s seminal article Walking from Cloud to Cloud:  The Portability Issue in Cloud Computing, which was published in 2010 in the Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts. Bob’s presentation notes may be viewed and downloaded here.
